Our class trip to the university library was enjoyable and far better than other library lectures that I have attended. The presentation that Mr. Walton had prepared for our group was interesting, and I left feeling that I had gained a lot of valuable information that could be useful in the future.
He spoke briefly to the class about using the CardCat system and noted that there is also a WorldCat system (this is something I did not know). We were introduced to the Inter-Library Loan program and time was given to register online. Mr. Walton talked about utilizing the best search words when researching a topic, and informed us that the The Library of Congress has published four volumes of search terms that are commonly called the "red books". It was mentioned that copies of these books could be found in multiple locations in the library.
The most intriguing part of the presentation was the discussion about data bases. I have had little experience using this type of resource, so this information was really appreciated. Mr. Walton described how some databases are better at providing specific information, depending on what it is that you are looking for. He also mentioned that we would be better served to look for full-text scholarly resources and make use of terms that narrow our search.
